About the Association

The GW Hatchet Alumni Association serves to facilitate connections between the vast network of Hatchet alumni across the country. It was created with the following goals in mind:

  • Plan professional and social programming to support interaction within the alumni community and between current and past staffs.
  • Collect and organize professional and geographic data about alumni.
  • Serve as a liaison between current staffers and alumni for purposes of networking and journalistic education.
  • Advocate for alumni interests and present inquiries to Hatchet leadership.
  • As necessary, assist in development efforts and other projects as they arise.

While The Hatchet had referred to its alumni community as an unofficial association for a few years, the push to create a real Hatchet Alumni Association began in February 2011. Discussions among a few recent graduates grew rapidly, and more than 50 graduates had given their input on what the organization would look like by the time the paper’s board of directors designated an alumni affairs committee to found the association in late June.

The association is led by Becky Reeves (copy editor, Vol. 107) and Lauren French (editor in chief, Vol. 107 and 108).
